Law student orientations to emphasize ethics, professionalism Mississippi Supreme Court Justice Jim Kitchens on Aug. 12 will help introduce new law students to ethics and professionalism demanded of the legal profession. Mississippi College School of Law Dean Wendy Scott, Mississippi Bar President Roy Campbell III and Justice Kitchens will welcome new MC Law students at 9 a.m. on the second floor of the B. C. Rogers Student Center on the Mississippi College campus in Clinton. Justice Kitchens said, “It is a privilege to have a role in shaping the thinking of young lawyers. I hope to challenge them to set their sights high and to aspire to practice law honorably and congenially with other members of the profession.” A reception for judges and attorneys participating in the professionalism program will start at 9:45 a.m. in the Board Room. Starting at 10:15 a.m., judges and lawyers from across the state will serve as facilitators for small group discussions with students. The breakout sessions examine hypothetical ethical dilemmas which lawyers may face. A luncheon for students, judges, lawyers and faculty is set for noon to 1 p.m. First-year law students at the University of Mississippi School of Law will participate in the professionalism program at the Robert C. Khayat Law Center on Aug. 20. Interim Dean Deborah Bell will welcome students at 9:30 a.m. Mississippi Supreme Court Chief Justice Bill Waller Jr. will deliver the keynote address. Breakout sessions with students, attorneys and judges will begin at 10:40 a.m. Students will have more opportunities to talk to judges and attorneys during a luncheon at noon at The Atrium. The annual James O. Dukes Law School Professionalism Program is sponsored by the Mississippi Bar as part of orientation for students entering law school. The program is named in honor of its founder, the late James O. Dukes of Gulfport, a former Mississippi Bar president. #### |
